The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman :: play, marxism,
Throughout the play The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman, the influence of Marxism is commonly displayed. The Hubbardââ¬â¢s are portrayed as constantly going against the social conforms that would be set in a Marxist society. They each pursue wealth or a social status. For what they covet, they go above and beyond to obtain. In the process they hurt other people. They each sacrifice their integrity to gain this wealth and status. Hellmanââ¬â¢s title highlights the opposition of Marxism that is portrayed in the play. The title of the play comes from the bible. In that portion referred to it states that the foxes, which are represented by the Hubbardââ¬â¢s, will destroy the glory of the new south because their greed for power is so great. (Watson 173). The Hubbardââ¬â¢s all destroy each other for money. They want to build a cotton factory where costs are cheep and they make a lot of profit. However, to achieve this they have to step on many people toes and exploit workers (Hellman 159). Reginaââ¬â¢s determination to gain wealth was unwavering. She let her husband die because he was not going to report her brothers for stealing his bonds. Regina then turns on her brothers and demands a greater percentage of the money since she can destroy them because they stole Horaceââ¬â¢s bonds. To Regina, money means freedom to escape and go to the south where social standing is measured by the cloths and jewelry you have. This is against Marxist society because Marxists believe that everyone should be equal in money and standing (Hamilton 172). Regina wants to go to Chicago and Paris but in the process she lets her husband die and looses the love of Alexandra (Galens 165). She now has the option to have the bright, flamboyant social life she wanted but she can only have it alone now. Ben Hubbard has cheated and manipulated to gain his wealth. In the play Regina states that Ben has cheated so many men to get where he is now that his reputation is ruined around the area. Ben has no need for money; he ultimately wants to remain childless and wifeless. Thus, his desire for money is solely for a capitalist purpose. He is only interested in build his empire (Hamilton 172). To build his empire he needs to land a deal with Marshall. To do so he tries to make a big point of how much better his father rules Birdyââ¬â¢s familyââ¬â¢s plantation and the differences between old southern aristocracy and new one.

Burtââ¬â¢s bee – an American company
Burtââ¬â¢s bee is an American company that deals into personal care products. It has differentiated its self on the basis of ââ¬ËEarth Friendly, Natural Personal Care Companyââ¬â¢. Their products are being made from beeswax, natural oils, herbs and minerals (Smith, Dulcinea Norton, 2008, March). This company begun its operations in the year 1984 when Roxanne Quimby and Burt Shavitz an ex-couple living in Maine started making candles. They were made from they by-product of beeswax obtained from Burtââ¬â¢s honey business. This invention made sale up to $20,000 by the end of first year. Soon they product earned recognition and got orders form a boutique in New York. They added many organic beauty products to expend this line. In the year 1991 they added their best seller product lip balm. Soon they discontinued their famous candle production and concentrated on personal care items. Currently their product line includes face, body, menââ¬â¢s grooming, baby care, hair, lip care and outdoor remedies product. Their products are being sold in different countries of the world including United States, United Kingdoms, Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Retail Experiment Burtââ¬â¢s bee distinguished itself on the basis of organic and eco friendly products. It created a niche for itââ¬â¢s product by targeting people who are more inclined towards purchasing and using less chemical oriented products. Retail business can be explained as sale of goods or merchandises directly to customers through a fixed point. Availability of logistics and expansion plans play a vital role in deciding either a company should move into retail business or not. When a profit bearing company like Burtââ¬â¢s Bee plans to expand its operation they have to make an appearance in shelves of different departmental stores, malls, grocery stores even drug stores to be more visible over other competitor products. Making such strong appearance is not possible by limiting itââ¬â¢s self to being a manufacturer and a direct seller. Looking at online shopping websites (which is also a part of retail business) it brings products at a click of one button. It also saves human resource and middle man profit. It gives endless shelf-space to a manufacturer to display its products. Burtââ¬â¢s bee was already selling their product through QVC and making handsome amount of profit on it. It was time to get into physical retail business to increase their profitability. Retail business has many different advantages. If one person is out to buy grocery for home might also want to purchase any product that he sees on shelves. We all try to experiment with new products. This experimental nature is at peek when we go out of the house to do a weekââ¬â¢s shopping. Instead of going at one particular shop to buy a specific product we all prefer one place stop that has all the products. Itââ¬â¢s an era of expediency and we enjoy taking advantage of it. Retail business aids in saving time for a lot of customers. People are so busy in their personal and professional lives they prefer buying all what they need from one places rather than visiting different shops for specific products. Retail business also gives an edge over all those strong products available only at their dedicated shops. Their presences can be easily overlapped with a product that is available at every nook and corner. People usually go out with friends to malls for shopping. Strong word of mouth can also play a heavy role in increasing sales. Burtââ¬â¢s bee has a reputable name in the market and a loyal set of customers. Changing brand habit should not be a difficult task for them once the presence of their product becomes prominent. Appearance of Roxxane Quimby at different retail shops once in a while will add to customer satisfaction. When she started the business by selling beeswax candle she realized that most of her customers looked at the bottom of it to check its finishing. Costumers are very particular about quality maintenance. Heavy marketing can attract more customers to meet the proud owner of the product they are using. The fear of being discontinued from the end users can also be minimized through this strategy. This can also be done through comment cards. People can fill them and send it to her to give her. Retail business enables a customer to compare products at the location. This comparison can be made on the basis of ingredients, prices and packaging. Burtââ¬â¢s bee has the competitive advantage of being organic and less chemically treated product over others. It has gain popularity for being made from natural oils unlike other products available in the market. Conclusion Thus opting for a retail business will help them achieve desired target in a given time period. It becomes difficult to be a direct seller and expend to different countries. Though sales and revenues increase can not be separated from good marketing campaign. Promotion incentives like free samples can also be used to help purchase of new products and attract more customers. Heavy ATL (Above The Line) and BTL (Below The Line) marketing can also increase product awareness and spread the brand name amongst non users. Product availability will have a proportionate effect on increase sales. With higher demand price can also be increased. People are ready to pay a high amount but do not believe in compromising in quality. They will always choose convenience of purchasing ten things from one shop then roaming around 10 shops to buy one thing.

Architecture of the Rich and Famous in Palm Springs
Mid-Century or Midcentury? Any way you spell it (and both are correct), the modern designs of world class architects from the middle part of the 20th century continue to define Palm Springs, California. Nestled in the Coachella Valley and surrounded by mountains and deserts, Palm Springs, California is only a few hours drive from the bustle and tinsel of Hollywood. As the entertainment industry enveloped the Los Angeles area during the 1900s, Palm Springs became a favorite getaway for the many starlets and socialites who were making money faster than they could spend it. Palm Springs, with its abundant year-round sunshine, became a refuge for a game of golf followed by cocktails around the swimming pool ââ¬â a fast-lane lifestyle of the rich and famous. The 1947 Sinatra House, with a swimming pool shaped like a grand piano, is but one example of the architecture from this period. Architectural Styles in Palm Springs The building boom in the United States after World War II enticed LA architects to Palm Springs ââ¬â architects go where the money is. Modernism had taken hold throughout Europe and already immigrated to the US. Southern California architects adapted ideas from the Bauhaus movement and the International Style, creating an elegant yet informal style that is often called Desert Modernism. Health Care for All Essay - 1013 Words
Access to preventive health care should not be definable as one of lifeââ¬â¢s luxuries, yet that is what is has come to be for the approximately ââ¬Å"50 million Americansâ⬠who have no health insurance (Turka Caplan, 2010). Clogged emergency rooms and ââ¬Å"preventable deathsâ⬠are just two of the consequences associated with the lack of health insurance that would provide access to preventive care (Turka Caplan, 2010). We as a nation are depriving our citizens of one of our most basic needsââ¬âbeing healthy. Countries that have universal health plans, like Japan and Germany, have better life expectancy rates, spend less on health care, and have more than double the number of its citizens insured (Stephens Ledlow, 2010). While the debate overâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The emergency room has become the new primary care facility for the millions of uninsured in the United States. Thanks to an ââ¬Å"unfunded mandate passed into law in 1986,â⬠hospitals that participate in the Medicare program must ââ¬Å"screen and treat anyone with an emergency medical conditionâ⬠(Stephens Ledlow, 2010). This unfortunately leads to emergency rooms full of people who may have something as simple as a sinus infection which then makes it really difficult for someone with a real emergency that did not require ambulatory transport to be seen in a timely manner. Another unfortunate result of this is that ââ¬Å"over 1,100 emergency departments closed over the past decadeâ⬠(Stephens Ledlow, 2010). Children in the United States are also suffering because of the lack of universal health care coverage. While there is coverage for children living at or below the poverty level, there is no coverage available for those children whose parents make too much money to qualify for the low-income programs and too little money to be able to afford health insurance. ââ¬Å"These gaps in health insurance coverage may lead to delayed or unmet health care needs among childrenâ⬠(Kim Viner-Brown, 2007). As a result, these children are less likely to be taken to the doctor for treatment of chronic illnesses like ââ¬Å"asthmaâ⬠or ââ¬Å"recurrent ear infectionsâ⬠(Hoffman Paradise, 2008). Analysis Of John Orwell s Pig Tales - 1751 Words
ââ¬Å"Real Dystopia in Pig Talesâ⬠Pig Tales is the first novel written by Marie Darrieussecq at the end of the twentieth century. It uses many pornographic scenes and bloody depictions to describe a womanââ¬â¢s transformation into a sow. During this transformation, the heroine also encounters men and women with different social statuses including marginalized homeless people, corrupted politicians, an exploitative perfume boutique director, customers in the boutique, a poor teacher, and black immigrants. Like the heroine diverse groups of people who made up a noteworthy part of the contemporary French society but were usually neglected or oppressed. Marchepiede is also portrayed as a religious and conservative lunatic and is criticized subtly in this novel. My paper focuses on Le Penââ¬â¢s political proposals as they are reflected by fictional characters in the novel and implicitly criticized by the narrative voice of the heroine implicitly. Jean-Marie Le Pen is obsessed with the national identity of France. He used to claim that his political position was neither left nor right, but French. He promotes the identity attached to Western, Humanist, and Christian civilization, and opposes the development of Islamic culture and practices in France and Europe. France had just seen the effects of far right politics on the Jewish community from the Holocaust in the middle of the twentieth century. Its influence was still existing when the novel was written but the topic of the Jewish community was rather avoided by people at that time. Meanwhile, the Algerian war of independence that happened in 1950s brought the relationship between Islamic and French culture into

Fiction and Literary Works free essay sample
With that said, it is important to remember that all literary works cannot always be easily classified into a single genre. Moreover, literary works which might be classified as belonging to one genre might possess many qualities more typical of other genres. For example, Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth is classified as drama, but in many respects takes the form of poetry. In other words, sometimes the differences between categories like drama, poetry, and the short story are not so easily defined. Often a short story might contain poetic or dramatic qualities, or a poem might include narrative and dramatic features. In your post, summarize the major similarities and differences between the forms of drama, poetry, and the short story. Demonstrate your ideas with textual examples from the course readings. In your response, include at least one example of each literary form. If you wish, you may also point to examples which indicate the blurring of literary genres (e. We will write a custom essay sample on Fiction and Literary Works or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page g. , the poetic qualities of Macbeth or the dramatic elements of Gift of the Magi). There are so much to say when it comes to similarities with drama, poetry and a short story.Personally I see that all three have some subliminal message for the audience whether it is lessons learn or an experience personal to the writer. In literary perspectives, like mentioned above, sometimes a poem or short story can merge with another genre such as drama. An example of a short story that can be drama is perhaps ââ¬Å"The Necklaceâ⬠because the story is about a lady who borrows and loses something her friend lent her and went through so much trouble to replace it instead of coming clean with the friend.A drama is meant to have characters that perform and we see this is a short story known as ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m Goingâ⬠where we see the characters clearly speaking and also we get narrative information to help the audience understand the plot and setting. Poetry is written in different formats or rhythms but can also tell a story but does not always have a plot. All have some sort of tone to set the seriousness or relax humor of the literary work. ââ¬Å"My Papaââ¬â¢s Waltzâ⬠is a poem which tells a story of a father and son yet there are also dramatic features as the story is told.

The Microprocessor Essays - Microprocessors, Microcomputers
The Microprocessor Microprocessors Evolution Only once in a lifetime will a new invention come about to touch every aspect of our lives. Such a device that changes the way we work, live, and play is a special one, indeed. The Microprocessor has been around since 1971 years, but in the last few years it has changed the American calculators to video games and computers (Givone 1). Many microprocessors have been manufactured for all sorts of products; some have succeeded and some have not. This paper will discuss the evolution and history of the most prominent 16 and 32 bit microprocessors in the microcomputer and how they are similar to and different from each other. Because microprocessors are a subject that most people cannot relate to and do not know much about, this paragraph will introduce some of the terms that will be in- volved in the subsequent paragraphs. Throughout the paper the 16-bit and 32-bit mi- croprocessors are compared and contrasted. The number 16 in the 16-bit microproces- sor refers how many registers there are or how much storage is available for the mi- croprocessor (Aumiaux, 3). The microprocessor has a memory address such as A16, and at this address the specific commands to the microprocessor are stored in the memory of the computer (Aumiaux, 3). So with the 16-bit microprocessor there are 576 places to store data. With the 32-bit microprocessor there are twice as many places to store data making the microprocessor faster. Another common term which is mentioned frequently in the paper is the oscil- lator or the time at which the processors ?clock? ticks. The oscillator is the pace maker for the microprocessor which tells what frequency the microprocessor can proc- ess information, this value is measured in Mega-hertz or MHz. A nanosecond is a measurement of time in a processor, or a billionth of a second. This is used to measure the time it takes for the computer to execute an instructions, other wise knows as a cy- cle. There are many different types of companies of which all have their own family of processors. Since the individual processors in the families were developed over a fairly long period of time, it is hard to distinguish which processors were introduced in order. This paper will mention the families of processors in no particular order. The first microprocessor that will be discussed is the family of microprocessors called the 9900 series manufactured by Texas Instruments during the mid-70s and was developed from the architecture of the 900 minicomputer series (Titus, 178). There were five dif- ferent actual microprocessors that were designed in this family, they were the TMS9900, TMS9980A, TMS9981, TMS9985, and the TMS9940. The TMS9900 was the first of these microprocessors so the next four of the microprocessors where simply variations of the TMS9900 (Titus, 178). The 9900 series microprocessors runs with 64K memory and besides the fact that the 9900 is a 16-bit microprocessor, only 15 of the address memory circuits are in use (Titus, 179). The 16th address is used for the computer to distinguish between word and data functions (Titus, 179. The 9900 series microprocessors runs from 300 nanoseconds to 500 ns from 2MHz to 3.3MHz and even some variations of the original microprocessor where made to go up to 4MHz (Avtar, 115). The next microprocessor that will be discussed is the LSI-11 which was pro- duced from the structural plans of the PDP-11 minicomputer family. There are three microprocessors in the LSI-11 family they are the LSI-11, LSI-11/2, and the much im- proved over the others is the LSI-11/32 (Titus, 131). The big difference between the LSI-11 family of microprocessors and other similar microprocessors of its kind is they have the instruction codes of a microcomputer but since the LSI-11 microprocessor originated from the PDP-11 family it is a multi-microprocessor (Avtar, 207). The fact that the LSI-11 microprocessor is a multi-microprocessor means that many other mi- croprocessors are used in conjunction with the LSI-11 to function properly (Avtar, 207). The LSI-11 microprocessor has a direct processing speed of 16-bit word and 7- bit data, however the improved LSI-11/22 can directly process 64-bit data (Titus, 131). The average time that the LSI-11 and LSI-11/2 process at are 380 nanoseconds, while the LSI-11/23 is clocked at 300 nanoseconds (Titus, 132). There are some great strengths that lie in the LSI-11 family, some of
